Turo, an online car rental service likened to “Airbnb of cars,” is facing scrutiny following its involvement in two violent incidents on Wednesday. A pickup truck rented through Turo was used to plow through a crowd in New Orleans, while a Tesla Cybertruck rented from the platform exploded in Las Vegas. Turo confirmed both vehicles were rented from its service but stated the renters didn’t have identifiable criminal backgrounds. While authorities initially deemed the incidents coincidental, Turo has faced criticism over security concerns related to peer-to-peer rentals. The platform has around 150,000 active hosts and claims to screen guests for safety.
