South Korean Guards Thwart Arrest of Impeached Yoon Suk Yeol Following Standoff

On January 2, 2025, around 30 supporters of impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol staged a sit-in protest at his residence as police attempted to arrest him under a detention warrant for insurrection related to his controversial martial law bid. The standoff lasted six hours, with Yoon’s presidential guards and military troops blocking authorities from executing the arrest. Despite multiple summons, Yoon had not complied, leading to the warrant, making him the first sitting president in South Korea to face arrest. The investigation into his actions continues as his impeachment case awaits a ruling from the Constitutional Court.
