Surgeon General Releases New Advisory

On April 5, 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a warning about the significant link between alcohol consumption and cancer, highlighting at least seven types of cancer associated with drinking. He emphasized that risks can begin with just one drink per day. The advisory advocated for policy changes, including clearer alcohol labeling and increased education on cancer risks. With alcohol as the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., Murthy noted it contributes to around 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 deaths annually. Younger adults are increasingly avoiding alcohol, favoring nonalcoholic alternatives.
