Matthew Livelsberger, a decorated soldier, used generative AI, including ChatGPT, to plan an explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas, as revealed by local police. Authorities reported that Livelsberger, who fatally shot himself after the incident, did not intend to harm others. Investigations showed he searched for information on explosive materials, ammunition, and the legality of fireworks. Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill described this incident as a concerning first use of AI tools for such purposes. OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, emphasized its commitment to responsible usage and stated that the tool provided publicly available information while warning against harmful actions.

Livelsberger, a former Army Green Beret, had prepared the vehicle with racing fuel and 130 pounds of explosive materials. His writings revealed that he wanted to raise awareness about societal issues, claiming the country was “terminally ill.” Although he considered various targets, he ultimately carried out his plans outside the hotel, resulting in minor injuries to seven individuals but minimal damage. His motives appeared linked to political grievances, and he expressed a desire for national unity around President-elect Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
