On January 20, Donald Trump will assume the U.S. presidency alongside his running mate, JD Vance. Vance, who gained notoriety from his 2016 book “Hillbilly Elegy,” provides a stark portrayal of societal challenges in North America. He recounts his tumultuous upbringing marked by economic decline, familial instability, and pervasive substance abuse, largely due to his mother’s struggles with addiction and a history of unstable relationships. Vance details his childhood experiences, including a complex family dynamic influenced by multiple father figures, half-siblings, and step-siblings, leading him to a belief that one cannot rely on others for support.
Despite the chaos around him, Vance’s grandparents played a crucial role in his upbringing, although their version of Protestantism lacked depth and meaningful spiritual guidance. They instilled in him a belief in self-reliance, encapsulated by the adage “God helps those who help themselves.” This background informs Vance’s perspectives on social issues and may shape his actions as a political figure in the Trump administration, suggesting that personal history and societal challenges could influence policy and leadership more broadly.

Vance is an inspirational figure in politics right now. The positives I take from the current problems in the church is from figures like Vance and the new wave of young orthodoxy priests that are entering the flock in these times. The church is slowly abandoning wokeness, but it will take a generation to really see the fruits of this.

Vance does not discuss North American society in his memior. He discusses a very particular subculture that he personally experienced: Appalachian. He specifies, because the culture in Appalachia is markedly different from other regions (and countries) within North America.
