Could Lab-Grown Seafood Save the Struggling Fishing Industry?

Umami Bioworks, a Singapore-based company, is addressing the challenges of overfishing, pollution, and climate change by cultivating cells from endangered seafood species in a lab. Focused on high-demand species like eel, bluefin tuna, and lobster, the company aims to sell production capacity rather than finished products, integrating stem cell biology, machine learning, and industrial automation. With plans to commercialize by 2025, Umami has partnered with Steakholder Foods to create the first 3D-printed lab-grown fish fillet and is collaborating with a Malaysian biotech firm to establish a large-scale cultivated food factory, supporting sustainability in Asia’s aquaculture industry.
