The New York Stock Exchange will close on January 9 in observance of a national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at age 100. The Nasdaq will also suspend trading that day, while bond markets will close early at 2 p.m. ET. President Joe Biden declared this day of mourning, coinciding with Carter’s funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The NYSE has a tradition of closing to honor deceased presidents, a practice dating back to 1885 with Ulysses S. Grant. Flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days as a tribute.
