Researchers have developed a groundbreaking all-light communication network that enables seamless connectivity across space, air, and underwater environments, using various light sources to overcome environmental challenges. This innovative network allows for real-time data transmission crucial for communication, navigation, and emergency response, as highlighted by Yongjin Wang from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications. The system supports simultaneous wired and wireless access, facilitating two-way communication and data exchange among network nodes.
The network employs different light types, including blue light for underwater communication, which travels farther due to seawater absorption properties; white LEDs for above-water communication; deep ultraviolet light for drone connectivity; and near-infrared laser diodes for point-to-point free-space communication. The researchers achieved full-duplex video communication and data transmission, demonstrating the network’s capabilities to handle high-definition video with minimal lag.
Future improvements aim to enhance throughput through wavelength division multiplexing and enable mobile node connectivity, addressing challenges in light alignment for underwater equipment and drones.
