A University College London (UCL) study has determined that each cigarette smoked reduces life expectancy by 20 minutes, increasing from the previous estimate of 11 minutes. Commissioned by the UK’s Department for Health and Social Care, the study highlighted the cumulative effects of smoking, emphasizing that quitting early can help regain years of life. Immediate benefits of quitting were noted; for example, someone who quits in January could gain an extra week of life by February. Public health officials stress the urgency of quitting, as tobacco use is a leading cause of preventable death, linked to various health issues.

    I find it so interesting how different each body handles such habits. Because if this was a hard truth applied across the board, my mom might have been dead before she had me. She started when she was 12, and at her peak was a 2.5 pack a day smoker. She’s 71 now and still smokes, but she rolls pipe tobacco in unfiltered papers 🤢. I smoked ONE cigarette with my friends before going out in my early 20s and I yacked the whole night and didn’t feel good into the next day. That was enough for me lol

    My mom smoked 3 packs a day for 30 years. She’s 85 years old. Doesn’t anyone really need to live much longer than that?
