Ancient Observatory or Not? Groundbreaking Study Questions the Purpose of the Iconic “Wheel of Ghosts”

A new study by researchers from Tel Aviv University and Ben-Gurion University challenges the long-standing belief that the Rujm el-Hiri site in the Golan Heights functioned as an astronomical observatory. Using advanced geophysical techniques and remote sensing, the study reveals that geodynamic shifts over the past 150 million years, moving at an average rate of 8-15 mm per year, have significantly altered the site’s alignment. The original orientation of Rujm el-Hiri’s walls and entrances does not correspond to celestial patterns, contradicting prior hypotheses about its purpose.

Led by Dr. Olga Khabarova and Prof. Lev Eppelbaum, the research also includes a comprehensive mapping of the surrounding archaeological landscape. The study identified features like circular structures and burial mounds, suggesting agricultural or herding uses. These discoveries provide a fresh perspective on ancient human activity in the region and highlight the complexity of connections between archaeological sites.

The findings were published in the journal Remote Sensing, emphasizing that a reassessment of Rujm el-Hiri is necessary to understand its true purpose and the historical context of life in the Golan Heights.
