Ann Telnaes, an editorial cartoonist, has resigned from The Washington Post after her cartoon critiquing media executives—including owner Jeff Bezos—was rejected. The cartoon illustrated these executives bowing to President-elect Donald Trump while offering bags of money, critiquing their attempts to win favor with the incoming administration, especially those with government ties. Telnaes expressed her concern that the rejection threatened press freedom, stating it was the first time an editor prevented her from delivering critical commentary.

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists backed Telnaes, labeling the Post’s decision as “political cowardice” and promoting her work on social media. Meanwhile, editorial page editor David Shipley defended the rejection by citing redundancy, asserting that similar critiques had already been expressed in other columns. This incident has ignited a broader discussion about the role of editorial cartoons in challenging power. Telnaes, determined to continue her work, plans to pursue her projects independently.

This controversy reflects ongoing tensions between editorial freedom and editorial oversight, raising important questions about the impact and importance of political satire in contemporary media.

Friendly reminder, because many seem to have forgotten, that Bezos owns The Washington Post.

What do you expect when you make a political cartoon about the guy who owns the company you work for being expressed in a negative way? The Post has always shown this weird bias.

Two possibilities: WP is now a puppet for the Trump administration, or the cartoonist was spreading misinformation under the guise of a joke, and worse of all, the joke didn’t land. I’d wager it’s a mix of both.
