BMW AG is set to launch a new operating system and an innovative “panoramic” display in its vehicles, starting towards the end of this year. This advanced system, named “BMW iDrive,” features a windshield-length display powered by the “BMW Operating System X.” Announced at the CES tech show in Las Vegas, the new display aims to enhance driver experience by providing pertinent information while allowing drivers to keep their attention on the road.
Frank Weber, BMW’s vehicle development leader, highlighted that this development enhances their already comprehensive infotainment system, establishing a new standard in multimodal interaction for the automotive industry. The display is reminiscent of a similar technology used by Ford Motor’s Lincoln brand, specifically in the recently launched Nautilus SUV. Additionally, the new system will include a “multifunction steering wheel” that illuminates buttons relevant to specific vehicle functions.
The rollout of the new system is set to begin internationally, with a U.S. debut planned for mid-2026. This initiative reflects BMW’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into its vehicles, ensuring enhanced functionality and driver safety.
