DOT Penalizes JetBlue for Frequent Flight Delays

The Department of Transportation (DOT) fined JetBlue Airways $2 million for “chronically delayed flights,” marking the first penalty of its kind. Between June 2022 and November 2023, JetBlue’s routes logged over 145 delays, primarily affecting flights from JFK to Raleigh-Durham and other destinations. The airline was responsible for over 70% of disruptions on these routes. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of realistic flight schedules. JetBlue attributed some delays to air traffic control issues and called for modernization and staffing improvements in the system. The DOT will credit $1 million of the fine towards passenger compensation.
