Researchers, led by Dr. Nathaniel Erb-Satullo from Cranfield University, have employed drone technology to explore Dmanisis Gora, an ancient mega fortress in the Caucasus Mountains, revealing it to be significantly larger than previously believed. Initial excavations began in 2018, highlighting a complex society with extensive settlements and dynamic seasonal interactions. The use of drones allowed the team to capture nearly 11,000 high-resolution images, which were processed to create detailed digital elevation models. The analysis revealed fortification walls and a large outer settlement protected by a 1 kilometer wall, which was more than 40 times larger than earlier estimates.
This research provides valuable insights into the evolution of ancient societies in the region between 1500 and 500 BCE. The findings suggest that Dmanisis Gora’s growth was influenced by interactions with mobile pastoralist groups, leading to seasonal expansion and contraction of its outer settlement. The team aims to further investigate population density, livestock movements, and agricultural practices through ongoing excavations that have already uncovered thousands of pottery shards and animal bones. This groundbreaking work not only reshapes understanding of Dmanisis Gora but also contributes to broader discussions on the formation of large-scale ancient settlements.
