Early Access Review of The Outlast Trials » GamePCFull

The Outlast Trials, developed and published by Red Barrels and released on May 19, 2023, is a cooperative horror game that combines absurdity and gore in a unique environment. Unlike traditional horror games, players often find themselves laughing at their friends’ antics as they navigate through twisted levels reminiscent of "Saw." Set in a chilling backdrop, players face off against poorly designed enemies while attempting to complete bizarre objectives, such as transforming an orphanage into a malevolent establishment. Despite its early access limitations, which include only three distinct levels, the game offers chaotic and tense gameplay as players evade AI-controlled psychopaths while completing tasks. The AI’s shortcomings make the enemies less of a threat, often leading to humorous moments that detract from the horror atmosphere.

While classic stealth elements require players to hide or distract foes without direct combat, gameplay occasionally struggles with clunky controls and bugs. The game features a minimal narrative emphasizing shock value and dark humor, but the excesses can feel gratuitous. Even with its rough edges, The Outlast Trials has potential for growth, with developers hinting at future content expansions to enhance the experience.
