Former President Jimmy Carter will be honored with a national day of mourning on January 9, as announced by President Joe Biden. Federal offices and stock markets will close, and flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days. Biden described Carter as “a humble servant of God and the people.” Tributes came from leaders including Donald Trump and Barack Obama. Carter’s funeral will be held at Washington National Cathedral, with public ceremonies in Atlanta and burial in Plains, Georgia. The Carter family accepted an invitation for him to lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda. Notably, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
