Thermal batteries are emerging as a promising solution for energy storage, with companies like Rondo Energy and Antora Energy at the forefront. Unlike traditional lithium batteries, these systems store excess electricity as heat in materials like bricks or graphite, achieving temperatures over 3,000°F. This heat can be utilized to power factories or converted back to electricity. Rondo, supported by Bill Gates and other investors, aims to significantly scale up production to help cut 12 million tons of CO₂ emissions by 2027. Despite challenges in production and market adoption, thermal batteries could substantially aid in decarbonizing industries such as steel and cement.
