Sands China CEO Grant Chum emphasized Macao’s shift from a gaming-centric economy to a diversified “city of sports and entertainment” during President Xi Jinping’s recent visit. In an interview, Chum announced a multi-year partnership with the NBA to host pre-season games in Macao, part of Sands China’s $4.5 billion investment commitment, predominantly in non-gaming sectors. The Venetian Arena has been upgraded for major events, including NBA games starting in 2025. Macao’s gaming revenue is recovering, and tourist arrivals have reached pre-pandemic levels, aligning with Xi’s call for innovation and attracting foreign talent.
