South Korea Impeaches Interim President Han Duck-soo

South Korea’s Prime Minister and acting President Han Duck-soo was impeached by lawmakers on December 14, 2024, following the recent impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol for imposing a short-lived martial law on December 3. Han’s impeachment stemmed from his refusal to appoint three justices to the Constitutional Court, which is deliberating on Yoon’s impeachment. The vote passed 192-0 with opposition support, while ruling party members boycotted. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok will succeed Han. This political turmoil has unsettled South Korea’s economic stability, with the Korean won and stock market both declining amid fears of governance issues.
