Starbucks Barista Strike Grows to Over 300 Stores Across 45 States

On December 20, 2024, Starbucks workers organized a strike, expanding to about 5,000 employees across 300 stores in 45 states. This action, initiated by the Service Employees International Union and Starbucks Workers United, aims to highlight alleged unfair labor practices and stalled contract negotiations. Striking workers demand a minimum wage increase of up to 64% immediately and over 77% over three years. Starbucks executives contend the union’s demands are unsustainable and express willingness to negotiate. Despite a previous surge in investor sentiment after hiring Chipotle’s CEO Brian Niccol, the company’s share price has declined recently alongside the broader market.
