A recent study from Ben-Gurion University reveals that adhering to a Green Mediterranean Diet can significantly slow brain aging. Researchers discovered that a mere 1% reduction in body weight can make the brain appear almost nine months younger over an 18-month span. This study is part of the larger DIRECT-PLUS trial, which involved 300 participants. The research, led by Prof. Iris Shai and involving contributions from several universities, indicates that weight loss can counteract the accelerated aging associated with obesity.

The study measured brain age—an assessment of how old the brain appears via scans—and found that lifestyle changes, including a diet low in processed foods and high in polyphenols, positively impacted brain health. Participants consumed daily walnuts, green tea, and a unique plant-based shake rich in nutrients. The findings suggest that these dietary interventions not only promote brain health but may also lead to better clinical outcomes for individuals with obesity. Overall, this research offers promising evidence for the role of diet and weight management in supporting cognitive function as the global obesity epidemic continues to rise.
