Why the Universe Isn’t Big Enough for Monkeys to Write Shakespeare

The Infinite Monkey Theorem suggests that given an infinite amount of time, a monkey typing randomly would eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare. However, a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Technology Sydney reveals that within the finite limits of our universe, this outcome is virtually impossible. Using a keyboard with 30 keys, the researchers calculated typing probabilities for a single monkey and the global population of 200,000 chimpanzees. They found that while a single chimp has about a 5% chance of typing the word “bananas” in its lifetime, the probability of generating Shakespeare’s entire oeuvre (approximately 884,647 words) remains astronomically low, even over a timespan estimated at 10^100 years. Associate Professor Stephen Woodcock highlighted that the theorem often misleads when considering the constraints of our universe, as the notion of infinity doesn’t hold practical applicability. The study, published in Franklin Open, invites readers to reflect on philosophical questions about creativity and consciousness in light of these finite constraints, especially relevant in today’s context of generative AI. This research emphasizes the distinction between theoretical and practical applications of probability.
