D-Wave Quantum CEO Alan Baratz criticized Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s comments about the future of quantum computing, asserting that Huang is “dead wrong.” Huang had stated that achieving “very useful quantum computers” could take 15 to 30 years, emphasizing the need for conventional chips alongside quantum processors due to a requirement for vastly more qubits. His remarks led to a significant drop in stocks of quantum technology companies, including a 36% plunge for D-Wave. In response, Baratz highlighted that D-Wave’s quantum computers are already in production use by clients like Mastercard and NTT Docomo, proving their value today, not decades away. Despite experiencing a 27% drop in revenue to $1.9 million, D-Wave’s shares have surged about 600% over the last year, bolstered by renewed investor interest in quantum technologies following Google’s advancements in the field. Baratz clarified that while Huang’s views might be relevant for gate-based quantum computing, they do not apply to D-Wave’s annealing approach, which is operational now. He invited Huang to a discussion to bridge these gaps in understanding. Nvidia did not provide comments on Baratz’s statements.
