On New Year’s Day, Shamsud-Din Jabbar killed 14 people in an ISIS-inspired attack by driving into a crowded New Orleans street. He had planned to detonate two explosives placed nearby using a transmitter, but they failed to activate. Authorities recovered the transmitter and guns from Jabbar’s truck, and he used a rare explosive compound not previously encountered in U.S. or European attacks. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on how he obtained knowledge to create the explosives. Jabbar also set fire to a rental house containing bomb-making materials before being killed by police. Mourning for the victims begins soon.
