In 2023, 4.7% of deaths in Canada were due to medically assisted dying, a practice legalized in 2016. Health Canada’s report indicates about 15,300 euthanasia applications, mostly from patients over 77 with severe medical conditions like cancer. Following a 2021 law expansion to include non-terminal illnesses, assisted dying cases rose nearly 16% but the growth rate has slowed. Disparities were noted, with 96% of participants identifying as white, and Quebec accounted for 37% of cases. Critics, including Cardus, voiced concerns over non-terminal cases, while Health Canada emphasizes stringent eligibility criteria involving two healthcare assessments.

Amazing 👏so many people left hospice care where they suffer for years until the end…let them go with dignity surrounded by their loved ones 😢

This is true body autonomy and personal freedom. It should be legal everywhere

Trying to keep people alive who suffer day in day out is a cruel thing. There is something beautiful about having a peaceful death on the time and place your choose.

Fine by me. Its probably a greater number that are dying after laying in a hospice bed suffering and drugged up for way too long before they depart.

Capitalism led to people seeking assisted dying because of lack of housing. The best economic system ever created ✨

If anyone is reading this, @hollywiththemd was a wonderful account by a person who was in pain daily with muscular dystrophy. She was an advocate for assisted suicide in Australia. She provided some great insight as to why you shouldn’t have to be actively dying to plan your death
