The NHL is set to host its inaugural outdoor hockey games in Florida, featuring two events in early 2026. The Winter Classic will take place on January 2 at LoanDepot Park, with the Florida Panthers facing the New York Rangers. Following this, the Tampa Bay Lightning will host the Boston Bruins in a Stadium Series game on February 2 at Raymond James Stadium. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman emphasized Florida’s hockey popularity, citing increased youth and high school hockey participation as indicators of the sport’s growth in the state.

To address the challenge of maintaining ice in warm weather, the NHL plans to utilize the roof at LoanDepot Park until the game starts, while a temporary structure will be erected over the ice at Raymond James Stadium, which lacks a roof. Despite higher costs associated with these unique setups, the league expects substantial attendance, with over 100,000 fans anticipated at both events. The NHL recognizes the inherent risks of outdoor games in Florida, but believes the potential rewards are significant, given the sport’s rising popularity and successful franchises within the state. Hockey registrations in Florida have surged, with a notable increase in participation from girls’ hockey players.
