Puma has filed a last-minute notice of opposition against Tiger Woods’ Sun Day Red brand, claiming its leaping cat logo is too similar to Puma’s logo, which has been in use since 1969. The German footwear giant argues that the resemblance could lead to consumer confusion, especially given the closely related nature of their respective goods and services. Puma seeks to prevent the TaylorMade-owned brand from using its proposed logo. In response, TaylorMade expressed confidence in their trademarks and logos. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben emphasized the significance of Puma’s challenge, suggesting that any ongoing litigation carries risks. He believes Puma has a strong case, and while a trial is anticipated around September 2026, a settlement could still be reached before that point. Gerben noted that logo disputes, like this one, are less common than those involving names or slogans, but stressed that Woods, as a high-profile athlete, draws considerable attention and scrutiny to his brand.
