Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, primarily affects older adults, leading to significant cognitive decline and loss of independence. Researchers at Drexel University have identified the Tip60 enzyme’s crucial role in RNA splicing defects associated with Alzheimer’s. This discovery highlights a new brain regulation mechanism that maintains optimal brain health. The team’s findings suggest that defects in RNA splicing may serve as early indicators of the disease, complicating treatment development. Led by Akanksha Bhatnagar and Felice Elefant, the study reveals that Tip60 not only activates gene expression but also regulates how RNA is spliced to produce diverse proteins essential for learning and memory. Their previous work demonstrated that restoring Tip60 levels in Alzheimer’s models reversed disease symptoms, indicating its potential as a therapeutic target. Additionally, the researchers are examining how environmental factors affect Alzheimer’s, noting that over 95% of cases arise without clear genetic links. Understanding these influences could pave the way for early identification of the disease through RNA variations, offering new avenues for drug development and effective treatments. The study underscores the importance of Tip60 in unraveling the complexities of Alzheimer’s disease.
