Scientists Unveil Groundbreaking Technology for Diamond Production

Researchers at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have developed a groundbreaking method for mass-producing ultrathin, flexible diamond membranes, enabling new applications in electronics, photonics, and quantum devices. Led by Professors Zhiqin Chu and Yuan Lin, the team, in collaboration with experts from Southern University of Science and Technology and Peking University, has tackled traditional fabrication hurdles by introducing an innovative edge-exposed exfoliation technique. This approach allows for the rapid production of free-standing diamond membranes, producing a two-inch diamond wafer in just 10 seconds, significantly enhancing efficiency and scalability.

These diamond membranes are compatible with existing semiconductor manufacturing processes, paving the way for their use in a diverse range of applications, including electronic and photonic devices, heat spreaders for high-density electronics, and even advanced quantum technologies. The researchers highlight the membranes’ potential to revolutionize flexible and wearable technology, stating their goal is to commercialize this cutting-edge innovation. With diamonds possessing unmatched thermal and electrical properties, this research not only sets a new standard in the semiconductor industry but also aims to usher in a new era of diamond applications in various fields.
