Scientists from four research institutes in Hamburg have introduced the Spitrobot, an innovative device that significantly simplifies the observation of protein changes during their functioning. This groundbreaking setup makes time-resolved crystallography more accessible to non-specialist research groups by allowing sample preparation in standard laboratories and utilizing automated high-throughput methods for processing. The Spitrobot streamlines the entire preparation process, enabling researchers to fix protein crystals and cryo-trap proteins at different transformation stages effortlessly. This advancement is poised to accelerate fundamental research in health and disease by providing more groups the ability to conduct experiments once limited to experts.

Currently, understanding intermediate steps of protein reactions has been challenging, often requiring specialized facilities like synchrotrons. The Spitrobot simplifies this by enabling the collection of “snapshots” of proteins throughout their reactions, facilitating a 3D visualization of structural changes over time. The technology allows researchers to initiate reactions easily and vitrify samples for analysis in standard laboratories, reducing reliance on complex setups.
