A cross-cultural study published by the American Psychological Association reveals that frequent interaction with artificial intelligence (AI) systems at work can lead to employee loneliness, insomnia, and higher after-work drinking. Conducted across the U.S., Taiwan, Indonesia, and Malaysia, the research highlights that while regular use of AI can foster helpful behaviors among employees, it may also negatively impact their mental health. Lead researcher Pok Man Tang, a management professor at the University of Georgia, points out the workplace challenges that arise as AI reshapes industries, noting that social isolation can spill over into personal lives.

The study involved multiple experiments where employees reported feelings of loneliness and attachment anxiety. Findings showed a clear association between AI usage and negative outcomes such as insomnia and increased alcohol consumption, although some employees demonstrated increased willingness to assist colleagues. Tang suggests that to mitigate these adverse effects, AI systems should include human-like features to enhance interaction, while employers could limit AI use and encourage social engagement. The outcomes underline the urgent need for mindful interventions as AI technology continues to evolve in the workplace.
