Ukraine Halts Russian Gas Flow to Europe: Who Faces the Highest Risk?

On January 1, 2025, Ukraine ceased the flow of Russian gas to Europe, ending a long-standing energy relationship amid ongoing conflict. This move came as both countries were unwilling to renew a transit agreement. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that the decision was to prevent benefiting Russia economically at Ukraine’s expense. Gazprom confirmed the halt, which may result in significant financial losses for both Ukraine and Russia. While some EU countries are concerned, others, like Austria, claim preparedness for the interruption. European gas storage remains over 70% full, reducing immediate winter energy security risks.
